The Premier League title defense is still in the hands of Manchester City as champions host Brighton must reclaim top spot from Liverpool. Pep Guardiola’s side saw a road to a trophy ending when they lost the FA Cup semi-final to Liverpool on Saturday. But a double can still be won with a Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid coming up next week. Guardiola will be hoping playmaker Kevin De Bruyne and midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, who were unused substitutes at Wembley through injury, will be fit to return against mid-table Brighton. Defender Kyle Walker was also not involved against Liverpool and has not recovered from his ankle problem. City are two points behind Liverpool heading into Brighton, who have beaten Tottenham and Arsenal in recent games. The pursuit of the four Champions League spots is the focus of another game on Wednesday. Arsenal cruise through London to reach third place Chelsea after back-to-back defeats saw Mikel Arteta’s side slip to sixth place. At the other end of the table, Everton will be looking to knock six points out of the relegation zone by beating Leicester. Newcastle and Crystal Palace meet at St. James’ Park, 12 points above the drop zone.

Real Madrid visit Osasuna with the aim of closing in on their second Spanish league title in three seasons. Victory would give Carlo Ancelotti’s side a chance to clinch the title next weekend against Espanyol, depending on other results. Madrid have a 15-point lead with six rounds to go. Second-placed Barcelona, who have one game less, are level on points with Sevilla and Atlético Madrid. Ancelotti won’t be able to count on midfielder Casemiro due to health reasons, and veteran Luka Modric will be rested. Fourth-placed Atlético host relegation-threatened Granada while mid-table Celta Vigo take on Getafe.

Dušan Vlahović will face his former side again as Juventus host Fiorentina in the second leg of their Italian Cup semi-final. Vlahović failed to score in the first leg, which Juventus won 1-0 in the striker’s first return to Florence since his acrimonious departure in January. But the 22-year-old has scored three goals in his last four matches. Defending champions Juventus have won the Coppa Italia a record 14 times. Fiorentina won the last of their six triumphs in 2001. The winner will face defending Serie A champions Inter Milan on May 11 after the Nerazzurri beat AC Milan 3-0 on Tuesday.

Leipzig host Union Berlin for a place in the German Cup final against Freiburg, who beat Hamburger SV 3-1 in the first semi-final on Tuesday. Leipzig, still in the hunt for their first major title, are hoping to do better than last year when they were beaten in the final by Borussia Dortmund. Dortmund and compatriot Bayern Munich have already been knocked out, giving the remaining sides a real shot at lifting the trophy at Berlin’s Olympiastadion on May 21. Leipzig and Union are in good shape. Union have won their last three Bundesliga games and are pushing for European qualification again, while Leipzig are on a 14-game unbeaten run in all competitions. Leipzig were only founded in 2009 and have never faced Union in the cup. They have played nine times in the Bundesliga and the second division, with Leipzig winning five of those games and the Union three. Leipzig have won all four at home, however, and expect to reach their third final in four years.

Paris Saint-Germain can clinch a record 10th league crown if they improve on second-placed Marseille. PSG are 15 points ahead. He can join Marseille and Saint-Etienne with 10 titles if he wins at Angers and second-placed Marseille fail to beat Nantes. A draw is enough if Marseille loses. If both teams win, PSG will officially need a point, even though they have a vastly superior goal difference. Record seven-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi and other key players will miss the PSG game. Messi has a swollen Achilles tendon on his famous left foot, while midfielder Marco Verratti (swollen left knee) and centre-back Presnel Kimpembe (sore right knee) are sidelined. Neymar is suspended. At the bottom of the table, 19th-placed Bordeaux are desperate for a home win against 17th-placed Saint-Etienne. Bordeaux have conceded 77 league goals this season.
