Organizers of the Olympics prepared Tuesday to unveil their latest ‘handbook’ of rules for controlling COVID-19 infections as the Japanese government debated whether to extend the state of emergency and the top official Olympics John Coates arrived in Tokyo.

Coates, vice-president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and his event manager, sparked a reaction last month when he said the Games would go ahead even if Tokyo was in a state of emergency due to the pandemic.

The Japanese government plans to end the state of emergency in Tokyo and several other prefectures as scheduled on June 20, but maintains certain restrictions such as restaurant opening hours until the start of the Olympics in July, national media said.

Economy Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura, in charge of Japan’s response to COVID-19, said that with hospital occupancy and infection rates still high, it was too early to speak as if lifting state of emergency was a done deal.

“Now is the time to call on the public, to suppress infections and to take initiatives for a stable supply of hospital beds,” he said. A decision on the emergency could be made as early as Thursday, media reported.

Organizers’ rules, known as the “playbook,” already require athletes and others to wear masks in most situations and frequent testing for COVID-19. Athletes and members of the media, whose travel will be restricted, will be subject to GPS monitoring for the first 14 days of their stay in Japan.

The latest update was due to be announced later Tuesday.

Around 11,000 athletes and 78,000 journalists, officials and staff are expected to attend the Games.

Japan has not suffered from explosive outbreaks seen elsewhere but has still recorded more than 772,000 cases and more than 14,000 deaths.

A slow rollout of immunization, although accelerating recently, means that only 13% of the population has received at least one injection.

An online survey of companies from June 1-9 by think-tank Tokyo Shoko Research showed 64% were in favor of canceling or postponing the Games due to concerns such as the spread of the virus and the slowness of vaccinations. Almost 60% said it would hurt their business, but just over 40% expected a positive impact.

Olympic Minister Tamayo Marukawa told a press conference that Pfizer Inc (PFE.N) will provide doses of its COVID-19 vaccine to an additional 20,000 people involved in the Olympics and Paralympics, the agency reported. Kyodo press, doubling the amount previously pledged by the United States. pharmaceutical firm.

Some 80% of qualified athletes have already been vaccinated and the IOC is pushing to increase the number.

Japan’s often uneven response to the coronavirus has eroded support for Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga.

A survey by public broadcaster NHK showed 37% approved of his government compared to 45% who disapproved, the highest rate of disapproval since taking office last September.

More than two-thirds were not convinced by his explanation of why the Games should be held or how they would be secure.

Just under a third wanted the Games canceled while 61% wanted either a cap on spectators or no spectators at all. Organizers have already decided not to allow overseas spectators and will appeal to domestic spectators later this month.

Reflecting the role of money in moving forward decisions, NBCUniversal chief executive Jeff Shell said on Monday that the event could be the highest-grossing Olympics in NBC history. NBCUniversal, owned by Comcast Corp (CMCSA.O), paid $ 7.65 billion to extend its U.S. broadcast rights for the Olympics through 2032.

The Games could be an opportunity for diplomacy. Japanese newspaper Yomiuri said South Korean President Moon Jae-In is planning a visit to Japan on the occasion of the Games, and Seoul hopes Moon will hold his first talks with Suga at that time. Read more

Japan’s top government spokesperson, however, denied that a summit was being prepared amid a row over islets claimed by the two countries. Read more

Relations between South Korea and Japan have deteriorated in recent years due to disputes over islets, the history of war and trade.

Ten Secured Socceroos, Matildas TV Rights and Football Returns to Become “Australia’s # 1 Sport” After $ 300 Million Investment Tue, 15 Jun 2021 05:01:50 +0000

“Being the number one sport in Australia, that won’t be the case next year. But I think it’s a good ambition that we can work on and that’s kind of where it starts for us.

“We really believe in football… in terms of making the sport more accessible to all Australians, it helps to get there because we really believe in the way the brands fit together and the ambitions of all of our companies are really good. aligned. “

The arrangement is a boon to the FA, although the approximate figure of $ 100 million is not pure profit for the governing body. The deal also includes a significant amount of contra, while the FA had to spend an unspecified amount to purchase the rights to much of the Socceroos and Matildas content from the AFC confederation marketing agency. in order to facilitate the package that she has now sold to Ten.

After sealing A-League independence late last year and unveiling a slew of lucrative sponsorship deals – including the Commonwealth Bank sponsorship of Matildas naming rights – in recent months, FA chief executive James Johnson said the organization had gone through the worst of COVID-19 and was now on a solid financial footing.

“It has been a remarkable year for the sport. We are in a very good position, ”said Johnson.

“This partnership with Network 10 is very important to us and I think it marks the start of a new era for our sport and we are very happy where we are and also where we are going.”

Anti-siphoning laws require that all Socceroos home World Cup qualifying matches must be shown on free television, but McGarvey said a “considerable amount” of other match content – including the FFA Cup annual final – will be broadcast via Dix.

All other games will find their way to Paramount +, which launches in Australia on August 11 at $ 8.99 per month.

“We left with the objective of obtaining both sets of rights [A-League and W-League, and national teams] a few months ago and we’re very, very happy to have been able to get them, ”said Jarrod Villani, COO and Commercial and Executive Vice President of ViacomCBS Australia & New Zealand.

“We think that puts the fan at the heart of what we’re trying to achieve here and that is to provide the Australian base of the sport for Aussie fans, and we’re going to be very focused on making sure we get the balance between our assets. in clear and on subscription.

The rights to the upcoming Men’s World Cup, Qatar 2022, are held by SBS, while Optus Sport secured the rights to the 2023 Women’s World Cup which will be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand last month. Zealand.

Industry rumors suggest that SBS may be open for resale of its rights after announcing it will shut down its iconic digital platform The World Game. Optus, meanwhile, is currently looking for a free streaming partner for its coverage of the Women’s World Cup.

Pro14 renamed United Rugby Championship thanks to investment from CVC Tue, 15 Jun 2021 04:00:39 +0000

Club Pro14’s rugby competition is changing its name, adding new South African teams and making new broadcast deals, the first sign of how private equity firm CVC Capital Partners is aiming to revamp the sport.

The buyout group paid £ 120million for a 28% stake in the tournament last year, one in a series of rugby deals as it seeks to reshape the global game by changing the how the sport is sold to fans, sponsors and broadcasters.

The competition, an annual tournament featuring teams from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Italy and South Africa, is renamed the “United Rugby Championship”, people familiar with the decision said. .

These people said they also made new TV deals for the start of the 2021/2022 season in September, including with the BBC in the UK, RTE in Ireland and SuperSport in South Africa. The organizers will also launch a new global subscription streaming service for fans.

While the goal is for the majority of matches to be shown on free TV to reach as many audiences as possible, the broadcast deals will help boost the competition’s annual revenue to £ 55million from £ 25m. million pounds sterling last year.

However, the tournament can still struggle to gain new viewers and new income. Rugby is dominated by interest in national competitions, such as the Six Nations in Europe, the Rugby Championship in the Southern Hemisphere, and the Rugby World Cup.

According to people familiar with the decision, the new United Rugby Championship will play fewer matches on weekends when international fixtures are held and the club’s star players represent their national teams.

Along with its stake in Pro14, CVC has also invested in England Premiership Rugby and Six Nations, the best rugby tournament for national teams in Europe.

His plans for the United Rugby Championship show how CVC intends to act as a go-between between the disparate groups that run the sport in order to improve the value of its investments.

The Luxembourg group, former owner of Formula 1 and Moto GP, has tended to take minority stakes in sports competitions, seeking commercial control in such a way as to allow it to bundle the television rights of different competitions and sell them to diffusers.

In addition to rugby, the buyout group has also acquired a stake in the global volleyball governing body and has recently conducted investment talks with companies such as ATP and WTP, both men’s and women’s tennis circuits. , the Italian football league Serie A and the American basketball franchise San Antonio. Spurs.

The United Rugby Championship will drop from 14 to 16 teams. Two South African teams, the Southern Kings and the Cheetahs, have left the competition but will be replaced by four of the country’s biggest teams: the Lions, Stormers, Sharks and Bulls.

Over time, South Africa Rugby, the country’s federation, will also become a shareholder in the competition, bringing it closer to some of the main European federations.

CVC has also discussed investing in South African rugby and is in talks to create a Club World Cup tournament of the world’s top club rugby teams. The CVC’s recent influence on rugby has helped push the discussions forward and a new global competition could be launched as early as 2024, according to people familiar with the discussions.

Is Netflix About To Replicate The Success Of Disney Product Merchandising? – RetailWire Tue, 15 Jun 2021 01:18:45 +0000

June 14, 2021

Netflix, taking over a Walt Disney page, will launch a Online Store to sell limited edition clothing, lifestyle products and collectibles from its extensive catalog of shows and movies. The site marks the first direct-to-consumer retail push for the world’s largest streaming service.

Large studios often make more money from royalties on licensed merchandise than from selling blockbuster movie tickets. Disney, with franchises ranging from “Mickey Mouse” to “Star Wars”, is by far the licensed leader.

Netflix has stepped up its licensing agreements since hiring Josh Simon, formerly at Nike, in March 2020 as vice president of consumer products. Recent new partners include Walmart, Amazon, Target, Sephora, Mattel, and H&M.

Rather than a massive “All About Netflix” site, however, will feature a rotating selection of exclusive, limited-edition items from select shows. The approach appears to be aimed at creating a buzz around the shows as they come out and gain momentum, as well as supporting its broader licensing programs.

Initially, the site will feature products from the “Eden” and “Yasuke” animated series, including a “Yasuke” clothing line in collaboration with streetwear brand Hypland and the designer. Jordan Bentley. Later this month, caps, t-shirts, hoodies and sweaters related to “Lupine”, a series about a thief based in Paris, will be available. Created in collaboration with the Louvre Museum, “Lupine” items also include a $ 150 side table and $ 60 cushions.

Over the next few months, Netflix will launch products related to the blockbusters “The Witcher” and “Stranger Things” and clothing from the Netflix logo from Japanese fashion house BEAMS.

In one blog entry, Simon described “as an exciting new destination combining curated products and rich storytelling into a shopping experience unlike any Netflix.”

Netflix is a content creation machine. In 2019, Netflix released 657 original first-run titles, i.e. more than nine times the original programming hours of video streaming rival, according to OMDIA research.

Among the skeptics is Mark Cohen, director of retail studies at Columbia University’s Business School, who questions the enduring popularity of Netflix’s often overnight hits. He said the New York Times, “Most of them have a short lifespan, unlike a Disney property, which is a long generational ride.”

Netflix has not revealed any plans for physical stores.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: What do you think of the overall merchandising opportunity around Netflix’s ever-expanding content library? Is Netflix’s limited-edition, direct-to-consumer approach with the right one?

“You have to have someone in charge who understands the strategic nature of investing.”

Hawks game at State Farm Arena certified as 1st TRUE sporting event in the world – WSB-TV Channel 2 Mon, 14 Jun 2021 12:01:00 +0000

ATLANTA – The Atlanta Hawks’ game against the New York Knicks last month not only stood out because of the two big teams facing off, but it was important because of State Farm Arena’s efforts for an environment greener.

The May 30 game was the first sporting event to achieve TRUE certification, which stands for Total Resource Use and Efficiency.

In order to become TRUE certified, an event must meet the requirements of the GBCI. These requirements include the establishment of a zero waste policy, having achieved an average of 90% or more overall diversion from landfills, incineration (energy recovery from waste) and the environment for non-hazardous solid waste. . The event must reduce, reuse, recycle, compost and / or recover for productive use in nature or the economy, and comply with all federal, state / provincial and local laws and regulations on solid waste and recycling. In addition, the project complies with all air, water and soil release permits required for the collection, handling or treatment of materials and meets or exceeds through documentation of effort data and waste diversion measures.

The May 30 match brought together 16,458 sold-out spectators.

“As we continue our journey to make State Farm Arena a zero waste place, we are grateful to our staff and fans who have all worked together to achieve this certification from GBCI,” said Sofi Armenakian, Director of Sustainability and operations for the Hawks and State Farm Arena. “We recognize how important it is for sport to create change and know that this is just another way for a sport site to contribute positively and act sustainably in its community. “

The Hawks have been helped by various organizations such as the Center for Hard to Recycle Materials (CHaRM), which helps create various recycling solutions for the city of Atlanta. CompostNow which provides commercial composting solutions – CompostNow allows us to compost all of our compostable serving items, cutlery and packaging. Additionally, the site activated 15 volunteers, teachers from Jonesboro Middle School, who joined the event as zero waste volunteers. In their roles, they helped venue guests sort through properly to reduce contamination. Additionally, Levy Restaurants, the official food and beverage partner of Hawks and State Farm Arena, contributed to the supply chain process. Pritchard Sports & Entertainment, the team’s official housekeeping partner, also operationally assisted with the collection and sorting of all materials.

“We all want the world to be a cleaner, healthier place for future generations, and we cannot achieve this without focusing on efforts to reduce and eliminate waste. TRUE seeks to instill a more circular economy and enable businesses and organizations to tackle these issues head-on by setting, pursuing and achieving zero waste goals for their facilities, ”said Mahesh Ramanujam, President and Chief from management, USGBC and GBCI. “To reduce the negative impacts of waste on people and the environment, organizations of all kinds will need to scale up and demonstrate leadership by prioritizing policies, operations and actions that dramatically reduce waste and limit extraction and l use of upstream resources. The Hawks and State Farm Arena’s commitment to pursue TRUE for Events certification really brings us closer to our goal of becoming a zero waste community that’s healthier for all of us.

In February 2021, Hawks and State Farm Arena successfully diverted 97% of the waste generated by fans during the 2021 NBA All-Star Game with the help of Rubicon, a software platform that provides waste solutions, recycling and smart city to businesses and governments around the world.

The world’s largest free-flying American flag is just miles from Lake Michigan Mon, 14 Jun 2021 05:32:16 +0000

It’s flag day today (6/14). I bet you didn’t know it the largest free flying American flag in the world proudly flies within 3 miles of Lake Michigan. The flag is just east of I-43 at Acuity Insurance in Sheboygan Wisconsin (which is only 117 miles straight from Grand Rapids).

The flag is on a pole 400 feet high. In comparison, the Amway Grand Plaza is 315 feet tall. It is 100 feet higher than the Statue of Liberty. There is a ladder inside the post. You can climb to the top inside the post.

The flag itself measures 140 feet by 70 feet (approximately 10,000 square feet). Each strip is 5 feet wide and each star is 3 feet wide. The flag weighs 340 pounds. It takes a minimum of five people to lower and hoist the flag.

Flag at Acuity Ins. shredded by a severe storm in June 2020 – photo. by Avdil Luma

The flag was torn apart by a severe thunderstorm on the evening of June 2, 2020. The anemometer atop the flagpole measured a gust of wind at 90 mph in this storm. A team was quickly assembled that evening to remove the ragged flag – scouring the ground for every piece. A new flag was quickly hoisted the next morning.

Acuity Insurance typically has 6 flags on its site and each flag flies for approximately 130 days. Then the flag is replaced and a ceremony is held at the local VFW to remove the flag.

You can read more about the flag here.

Mayor’s budget pushes for more public safety, no planned increase in property tax rate Sun, 13 Jun 2021 18:01:16 +0000

The mayor will present his proposal to city council at 1:30 p.m. Monday.

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird has released her budget proposal for the 2021-2022 fiscal year. She will present her proposal to city council at 1:30 p.m. Monday.

The budget proposed by the mayor emphasizes the restoration and renewal

No planned increase in the property tax rate

Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird said his proposed budget for fiscal year 2021-2022 invests in services, programs and infrastructure that will fuel economic recovery and develop a prosperous future for Lincoln. She said these investments can be made without increasing the property tax rate due to four factors over the past year:

  • Solid management by municipal directors
  • The hard work and commitment to quality services of City employees
  • An economy in recovery, fueled by difficult but smart choices made in the 2020-21 budget
  • Timely assistance from federal and state governments

The mayor will present his proposal to city council at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, June 14.

“Last year, when developing the budget, we made smart and difficult choices to ensure the safety and health of the community as well as to deal with the economic impacts of the pandemic,” said Mayor Gaylor. Baird. “Faced with these extraordinary challenges, we have encountered the moment. Now, as we begin to see the light at the end of the tunnel, this year’s budget is focused on the future – a future of restoration and renewal.

The city adopted a two-year budget cycle in 2012, but last year Mayor Gaylor Baird called on city council to take action to authorize one-year budgets for 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 in order to enable the city to respond more adequately to changes in income. and the needs of the community.

Gaylor Baird said the budget reflects these five values and goals and includes the following:

Develop a dynamic urban economy and quality of life

Create a more equitable and inclusive community

  • Creation of a diversity, equity and inclusion administrator to ensure that city hall reflects and can meet the needs of diverse members of the community
  • Support affordable housing by removing barriers to building quality infill housing, expanding areas eligible for a $ 5,000 tax credit for first-time homebuyers, and creating a rental rehabilitation program
  • Housing and public services assistance
  • Services from Enhanced Aging Partners, including support for the Victory Park project and continuation of the NeighborLNK program

Build a strong and resilient Lincoln

  • Investments in repair, rehabilitation and construction of streets
  • Financing of a public transport development plan and purchase of four adapted transport vehicles using alternative fuel
  • Support for cycle paths, markings and trails and doubling of funding for the sidewalks program
  • Investments in water infrastructure, including replacement of meters and mains, repairs to wellfields and preparations to secure a new source of water supply
  • Continued investments in the treatment and recovery of the emerald ash borer

Foster the city’s innovative and excellent operations

  • Reinforced cybersecurity
  • Support teleworking capabilities and operational efficiency and standards
  • Updates and expansion of digital communication and information systems

The city’s property tax will remain at 31.980 cents per $ 100 of assessed assessment. This works out to $ 576 in municipal property tax for the owner of a $ 180,000 home. Of every dollar of property tax, the City’s share is about 16 cents. The total tax-funded budget increases from $ 210.95 million in the current fiscal year to $ 224.5 million in 2021-2021.

The city’s number of employees increased by only 13.5 FTEs, from 2,245.5 FTEs in 2005-2006 to 2,259 FTEs in 2021-2022, although Lincoln added more than 45,000 residents during this period.

The city council’s public hearing on the budget is on Monday, August 3, and the council is expected to adopt the budget on August 24. More information on the city’s budget is available at
