Frontier is one of the most underrated shows on Netflix and many are still hoping it will be renewed on Netflix. Sadly, despite a few sources indicating that Frontier has been renewed for a season 4, 3 years after the success of season 3, it’s unlikely we’ll ever see the series return.
Frontier is a show that follows Declan Harp (played by Jason Momoa) who was an outlaw working in the fur trade centuries ago.
The show was a co-production between Netflix and Discovery Canada, Season 1 discontinued in 2016. It ran for three seasons, with new seasons being deleted each year thereafter, with Season 3 premiering on Netflix worldwide in November. 2018 (Netflix Canada a little later).
Frontier Season 4 Renewal Status
Official renewal status: Canceled
While we haven’t heard anything official from Netflix itself, the series is almost certainly canceled now 3 years later. Again, no official confirmation from Discovery Canada or Netflix.
Shortly after the release of Season 3, there were conflicting reports as to whether the series would return, most of it coming from Jason Momoa who initially seemed confident that the series would return and was indeed planning for the occasion.
The first mention is in an Instagram post where he discusses the show in detail. Most important, however, is how he ends the post with the following six words: “Season 4 is going to get dark.”
In a later video on his YouTube channel, again in January 2019, he visits his hometown of Iowa but says he has to return to Vancouver (where Frontier is filmed) to get back to work.
In an Instagram post, Jessica Matten, who plays Sokanon on the show, said season 4 will not be returning. Jason Momoa later posted on his Instagram Story where he said, âRest In Peace Declanâ which refers to his character in Frontier.
The creators and actors have all since moved on to other projects. Rob Blackie, who was one of the creators of the project, has since continued to produce Little dog, SurrealEstate, and has upcoming projects including Astrid and Lilly save the world and Son of a critic.
We’re unlikely to hear anything officially about Frontier in the future, but the series is leaving a lasting legacy on Netflix as one of the best co-productions in Netflix history.
We also advise fans of the series to check out the manufacturing documentaries uploaded to Jason Momoa’s YouTube channel.
