Operation American Hustle: City leaders discuss West Side impact after drug smuggling breaks out

CHICAGO — Following a shooting on the Near North Side, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Chicago Police Department Superintendent David Brown joined other city leaders to discuss the results of Operation American Hustle.

The 15-month effort resulted in more than 30 arrests and 10 of those people were federally charged with drug trafficking. While the charges were previously announced by the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, at Friday’s press conference, city leaders focused on additional resources for West Side communities, such as behavioral health treatments.

The press conference also came after new restrictions on minors and security procedures were put in place at Millennium Park. These measures were in response to a fatal shooting in the park on Saturday.

Lightfoot also proposed changing the city’s current curfew for minors from 11 p.m. to 10 p.m., a measure that was passed by the city council’s public safety committee on Friday morning.

Following the prepared remarks, Lightfoot and Brown answered questions from the media which largely focused on the recent violence. Watch the full event in the video above.
