- Vox Media Studios and Box To Box Films will produce series
- Collaboration with Netflix will help tap into ‘a completely new and diverse audience,’ says PGA Tour’s Rick Anderson
The PGA Tour of Golf has confirmed that it is teaming up with streaming giant Netflix for a new docuseries that will follow top players throughout the season, including at major championships.
This is the first time that the PGA Tour and the governing bodies of the four majors – Augusta National Golf Club, the PGA of America, the United States Golf Association (USGA) and the R&A – will allow such unprecedented access.
In addition to the Masters, PGA Championship, US Open and The Open Championship, other major events will feature in the series, including the FedExCup and Players Championship.
Filming is already underway, but no release date has been announced.
Announcing the collaboration, reports of which emerged in September, the PGA Tour said the series would provide access inside the ropes and behind the scenes, including an in-depth look at “training intensity, journeys, victory and defeat”.
The series will also feature a large cast of players and their supporting teams, with the likes of Rickie Fowler, Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and Bubba Watson all set to appear.
It has also been confirmed that the series will be produced by Vox Media, which collaborated with Netflix on the ‘Explained’ series, and Box To Box Films, which worked on the hit Formula 1 show ‘Drive to Survive’.
“This partnership with Netflix provides the PGA Tour and all four major championships with an opportunity to tap into a completely new and diverse audience,” said PGA Tour Chief Media Officer Rick Anderson.
“This documentary will give fans an authentic insight into the real lives of our athletes and what it’s like to win – and lose – during a season on the PGA Tour.”
Brandon Riegg, Netflix’s Vice President for Unscripted Series and Documentaries, added, “We’re thrilled to bring together golf’s major organizations and players for this one-of-a-kind partnership and an unprecedented window into the life of the Tour.
“Our members will love learning about the players and personalities as well as the iconic locations along the way. Even the most dedicated golf fans have never seen the sport like this.
