Plow issues are responsible for last-minute cancellation at Comstock Public Schools

COMSTOCK TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Comstock Public Schools students were treated to another day of snow Friday, their third in a row — but for a slightly different reason than the first two.

The official announcement fell at 6:57 a.m. on the Facebook pageComstock Public Schools administrators later explaining that their “snow removal company ran into trouble and was unable to get all of our lots cleared in a timely manner”.

Decision to cancel school was so late that school buses were already running, district says

Given the late timing of the decision, comments from parents poured in. One mum said: “My daughter was literally getting ready to walk out the door. Another whose children take the bus said they were “outside for a while, waiting”.

In one detailed apology letter and explanation to parents and staff, Comstock Superintendent Jeff Thoenes said, “The company (the district) employs (s) to till the grounds has assured that the district…(he) would have the grounds plowed this morning. “

But at 6:15 a.m. Friday, he explained, “that was not the case at one of our schools. Took about 15 minutes to figure out…there were several unplowed and impassable school grounds and district driveways.

Administrators are still unclear as to why the snow was not cleared, but have confirmed that JH Lawncare is the company employed. News 8 stopped at its last posted address and attempted to call to give the company a chance to tell its version of what had happened, but did not get a response before business closed. offices on Friday.

Thoenes says he felt it was better to cancel school late and apologize than to let the buses and cars continue to school and find they won’t get there safely.
