The Three Way Recreation Area is now open to the public

THREE WAY, Tennessee — A project that began in 2016 is now nearing the end of phase one.

The Middle Fork Recreation Area at Three Way is expected to provide West Tennessee residents with a place to walk, run, fish and kayak.

When complete, the 850-acre recreational area will have five lakes ranging from 2 to 10 acres each.

Paige Keith of the West Tennessee River Basin Authority says the project has suffered several delays in recent years.

“The main delay is the weather, as is the case with any project. When it’s raining and it’s raining outside, it’s difficult to get that equipment in there for the parking lot paving and gravel that’s there,” Keith said.

So far, the first phase of the project is 90% complete, meaning the driveways are mostly paved and ready for use.

But what isn’t quite ready yet are kayaking, fishing, and all recreational activities on the water.

“The grating and paving of the pathways, these should be finished by the end of April. Phase two will include signage at the trailhead, lookouts and temporary restrooms,” Keith said.

Keith says they expect those who want to get out on the water will have the chance to do so by the summer.

“Hopefully with this weather our lakes are going to be filled so people can get out and fish, maybe kayaking, because I know that’s what a lot of people are looking forward to doing,” Keith said. .

She says they hope the project will be fully completed within two to three years.

And Keith says it will become a place where people can enjoy the outdoors.

“Having a place where families can hang out and enjoy what our area has to offer as far as nature goes, I think that will be a wonderful thing,” Keith said.

Keith says they hope to add more phases to the area which includes a visitor center if they can secure the funding.
