Two controversial Johnny Depp remakes are now streaming on Netflix

Another new month and another new batch of new movies and TV shows on Netflix are available to stream. While titles like four of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies, three of Terminator films and those of Zack Snyder 300, are now available on Netflix, a pair of two highly controversial films starring Johnny Depp have also appeared on the service in one way or another. Not only are these remakes starring Johnny Depp, but they are also Depp / Tim Burton collaborations, unfortunately we are referring to the C of 2005.harlie and the chocolate factory and 2012 Dark shadows (without Burton’s Depp Big fish is also now streaming too).

In Charlie and the chocolate factoryAlthough Depp and Burton were apparently aiming for something a little closer to Roald Dahl’s original book rather than an outright remake, has been met with derision. Depp played the role of candy maker Willy Wonka for the film, delivering a larger-than-life performance than Gene Wilder did in the original 1970s feature. Wilder even made a statement on the remake of the film, at one point qualifying its existence as an “insult”.

“These are just people who sit and think, ‘How do we make more money? Why else would you want to remake Willy Wonka? I don’t see the point of going back and starting all over again, “Wilder told The Telegraph in 2004.” I love Johnny Depp and I appreciate that he said on the record that my shoes would be hard to fill. . But I don’t know how it will all turn out. At the moment, the only thing that relieves me a bit is that Willy Wonka’s name is not in the title. “

With Dark shadows, Depp took on the role of vampire Barnabas Collins, originally played by Jonathan Frid in the long-running original soap opera. Frid tragically passed away before Depp and Burton Dark shadows The movie was released, but when his death was reported, Depp revealed that Frid “generously passed the Barnabas torch to me,” calling him as elegant and magical as I had always imagined.

the Dark shadows the remake wasn’t as immediately dismissed by some fans as Charlie and the chocolate factory, but the critical consensus on it on Rotten Tomatoes reads: “The visuals are top notch, but Tim Burton never finds a consistent beat, mixing country jokes and gothic spooky with less success than Johnny’s other collaborations. Depp. ”

Both films were marginal box office successes, but with Charlie and the chocolate factory grossing $ 475 million worldwide and Dark shadows grab $ 250 million worldwide.

As the title suggests, if you’re interested in watching either of these divisive experiences, Netflix is your destination.
