Wyoming superintendent of public instruction resigns after being offered job in Virginia

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) – Wyoming Superintendent of Public Instruction Jillian Balow is resigning. In a letter, Balow publicly announced that she would step down after being asked to hold the same post in Virginia under Governor-elect Glenn Youngkin. In the letter, Balow spoke about her accomplishments as superintendent.

“As state superintendent, I have made the voice of parents a priority by including parents in our policy decisions, such as state standards review boards.” Balow said, “We pushed through the Capitol’s inertia to pass historic computer science education requirements for K-12 public schools, significantly enriching and modernizing the curriculum delivered to our students.”

Balow would go on to speak fondly of his career in Wyoming which had humble beginnings.

“I began my teaching career in the small town of Hulett, Wyoming, population 386.” Balow wrote, “From there I built a 25-year career in education and politics, as a national literacy consultant, executive in state government, policy adviser in the governor’s office and now superintendent of public instruction elected. ”

Governor Mark Gordon, in a statement of his own, responded to Balow’s resignation.

“I have enjoyed working alongside Superintendent Balow for the past seven years in my roles as Treasurer and Governor, making her the second longest-serving elected statewide currently.” Gordon said: “His service to the state has been exemplary and I wish him well in his new role.”

Governor Gordon has briefed the Republican Party Central Committee, which will have 15 days to find and recommend three choices for a new superintendent governor. Gordon will then make a selection from the three, who will serve the remainder of Balow’s term. Balow’s resignation takes effect on January 16.
